Layers and partitioning

Layers
Partitioning

Layers

A data layer has already been described as a set of logically related geographic features and their attributes. Features included in particular layers are chosen by the user. Usually organisation is based on grouping similar feature types. For example, data can be grouped thematically according to the type of geographic features that are represented.

Partitioning

Partitioning the data involves subdividing data into smaller units called tiles. This occurs when the GIS has to handle large amounts of data.
