Database design

When the user has determined the data to be used and how it is going to be used, the next phase is to design the database that the data is going to go into.

This involves considering factors like:

• how the data is organised into layers
  
  
• how to partition the data
  
  
• data relationships
  
  
• internal organisation of the data
  
  
• tile configurations
  
  
• data conversion
  
  
• scale, resolution
  
  
• accuracy
  
  
• coordinate systems and projections
  

Database design involves making decisions on how to build up the information layers in the database. For example, what to put in particular Themes and Views when working with ArcView.
