Awareness and system planning

Awareness
System planning

Awareness

This stage involves not only the realisation that GIS can help address the problem that the user is interesting in examining, but also that GIS offers a better way of dealing with the problem. This stage therefore needs an awareness of the capabilities of GIS.

System planning

This includes a project definition, an assessment of what you want to do.

The first stage in any GIS planning exercise is to develop a project proposal. This enables the requirements of the system to be assessed.
