Arc GIS

If you are unfamiliar with ArcGIS
If you have experienced ArcGIS

ArcGIS is the main software used by GIS professionals worldwide. To find out more go to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcgis
http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis

If you are unfamiliar with ArcView or ArcGIS

Students who are new to GIS and have not used ArcGIS before should take a look at ESRI's Virtual Campus free course Getting started with ArcGIS 10.1.

To access the course go to http://training.esri.com/
See Free GIS modules - Getting started with ArcGIS 10.1.

This will give you:

  • some idea of what the software looks like

  • an understanding of how it works

To do the exercise components you must have ArcGIS installed on your computer but you can just run through the background reading with normal Internet connections.
The lecturer will give you a copy of the software

You can also work on the computers in the GIS/RS lab at CDU which have ArcGIS installed.

If you have experienced ArcGIS

If you already have some basic ArcGIS experience, you could take a look at some of the other training course relevent to environmental management. One useful course to supplement this unit if you have already completed ENV208/ENV508 or SES220 is the 'Creating and Integrating data for Natural Resource Applications' course.

If you are interested in taking or having a look at this course please e-mail me at diane.pearson@cdu.edu.au to get an access code

  • ESRI also runs instructor led courses. Contact your lecturer if you want to find out more about available courses.
