Analysis

There are three main types of analyses applied to remotely sensed data:

  • Measurement - values detected by sensors are used to calculate environmental conditions eg surface temperature, soil moisture, condition of crops, quantity of plant material

  • Classification - regions with the same characteristics are defined and grouped together

  • Estimation - is commonly applied to the results of classification. This process is used to estimate quantities of different materials or groups.

Verification

An indication of how accurate the results are is needed to substantiate the results. Confidence in classification for example can be achieved from ground truthing; that is by going out into the area that has been mapped by remote sensing, and recording what is present on the ground.
