Three criteria for determining the matrix

There are three criteria used to determine the matrix. These are:

  • the relative area (the landscape element covering more than 50% of the area is likely to be the matrix)

  • the degree of connectivity

  • identification of the element that exerts the most control over landscape dynamics

(Forman and Godron, 1986)
