Factors affecting the appearance of landscape structure

The scale at which a landscape is examined affects the appearance of pattern present within it. There is no single correct scale at which to look at landscapes or to investigate ecosystem processes.

The spatial and temporal scale at which the landscape is observed affects what is determined as disturbance (White and Harrod, 1995).

Human activity can alter the scale of operation of processes in the landscape. Disturbance can bring about changes to the inherent scale of the structure present in the landscape. See also:
