Factors affecting the appearance of landscape structure The scale at which a landscape
is examined affects the appearance of pattern present within it.
There is no single correct scale at which to look at landscapes or to
investigate ecosystem processes. The spatial and temporal scale
at which the landscape is observed affects what is determined as disturbance
(White
and Harrod, 1995). Human activity can alter the scale of operation of processes
in the landscape. Disturbance can bring about changes to the inherent
scale of the structure present in the landscape. See also: Effects
of scale on landscape indices
