The Charles Darwin National Park (CDNP) is where you will be carrying out your fieldwork. The Draft Plan of Management of the CDNP is available on the web in Adobe PDF format (Adobe Reader can be downloaded from the web for free) and this document contains both flora and fauna lists as appendices. Other appendices include a vegetation map, land units map and a listing of cultural sites.
NB. this documnet is currently within the Parks and Wildlife Commission NT web site. This department has since been incorporated in the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, so this web address is expected to change.

The Federal Government's conservation agency, Environment Australia, has developed a process that assesses the conservation status of threatened species, and has produced publications of 'Action Plans' for most Australian faunal groups. These action plans are also available via the Environment Australia web site.

This site provides as example of a physiognomic system that has been used to describe vegetation.

This method describes vegetation by layers, from highest to lowest. The height classes for layers are arbitrary but generally useful (<0.1, 01-0.5, 0.5-2, 2-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-35, >35m). Within a layer the vegetation is divided into life-form categories: eg. presence or absence of wood, shape of leaf (needle, broad), longevity of leaves (evergreen, deciduous), size of leaves, peculiar growth forms (lianas, succulents etc). This site provides an example of a community structure of the flora of a mangrove forest. Seven transects were used to measure number of species, number of individuals of each species and circumference at breast height. After computing basal area, relative frequency, relative dominance, and relative density were calculated. CANT FIND

Appendix 1 and 2 of the document contained in this link provides details of two plot based floristic surveys.
"Compilation and Validation of State Forests Flora Data - Eden CRA region". A report undertaken for the NSW CRA/RFA Steering Committee, 24 Nov 1997. Prepared by the State Forests of NSW.

  1. The Eden Burning Study Area Vegetation data: the objective was to examine the effects of integrated harvesting and fuel reduction burning regimes on dry sclerophyll forests. The objectives are:
      • to describe pre-treatment patterns of floristic variation in relation to broad habitat parameters;
      • to investigate impact of treatments on understorey floristic patterns;
      • to investigate response of individual species to treatments, e.g. changes in abundance, response mechanisms, patterns of recovery and reproduction.

    Details are provided of data collection for understorey species.

  2. Yallumba Catchments Vegetation Project: the objective was to examine the effects of integrated harvesting and unplanned fire on floristic composition.

"Plant biodiversity in Natural, mixed-species Forests and Silvicultural plantations in the vicinity of Fundy National Park" Case study within the Greater Fundy Ecosystem Research Project. Cam Andrea Veinotte, Bill Freedman and Wolfgang Maass. (1996) This study aims to examine the effect of clear cutting and plantation establishment on the region's floral biodiversity. Details are provided of the sampling regime which included, within each stand, 30 quadrats of 1m2 established along a transect, in order to sample the ground vegetation present within the site.
