New applications

When an organisation has an existing GIS in operation, but wants to set up a new GIS application, some degree of planning is necessary to ensure user requirements are met and that the system meets the new demands that will be placed on it.

Good planning can also help to identify areas in GIS development or database creation that will take the most time.

Factors that need considering when considering using your GIS for a new application are:

  • awareness of how GIS can solve the problem

  • system planning

  • functional and data requirements

  • data capture and integration

  • database design

  • implementation
