Landscape ecology focuses on three characteristics of landscapes:

  • Structure - spatial relationships between landscape elements, also called 'pattern'.

  • Function - the interaction between spatial elements. Function also refers to the processes that operate within the landscape.

  • Change - the alteration of structure and function over time.
