Gradients of human disturbance

Forman and Godron (1986) list five gradients of human modification of the landscape:

• Natural landscapes - where there is no significant human impact
  
  
• Managed landscapes - where native species are managed
  
  
• Cultivated landscapes - which are predominantly cultivated
  
  
• Suburban landscapes - which are a mixture of residential, commercial, cropland, managed vegetation and natural areas
  
  
• Urban landscapes - which are densely built up.
