Land classification based on disturbance

Fragmented landscapes are the sort usually considered by landscape ecologists but according to McIntyre (1998) landscape types vary with different stages of disturbance, the result being at least 4 different landscape types

• intact (where less than 10% native vegetation has been destroyed or removed)
  
  
• variegated (where 10-40% of native vegetation has been removed)
  
  
• fragmented (where 40-90% of native vegetation has been removed)
  
  
• relictual (where more than 90% of native vegetation has been destroyed)
