Task
Using the template provided (or create your own),
develop your own web page for the Contested Knowledges unit website
which addresses the contested nature of one of the issues presented in
the classroom.
This assignment is your opportunity to pursue one of the
ISSUES discussed within the unit and to report on your investigation
into the issue as a webpage. Your report needs to investigate the issue
in the light of the four 'Key Questions' you received with the material
for this unit.
We would expect the website to be readable, address the
key debates around the issue and provide links to places on the web
that may have relevant information. The aim is to direct your reading
around this issue and investigate the different avenues of thought
regarding Contested Knowledges in that field. You should also discuss
your particular issue with the other students and your lecturer and
more than likely incorporate some of their ideas into your webpage as
they contribute some ideas as part of their Assignment Two.
Choose one of the following Issues introduced on the
Contested Knowledges Website:
- Land
- Nature
- Law
- Medicine
- Education
- Language
- Economics
- History
- Gender
- Fire
Once you have decided on your issue,
- Inform the rest of the class of your decision in the
Notices by the end of Week 2;
- Read widely and report on that issue using the four
'Key Questions' to guide your thoughts:
- What is at stake?
- What is the status quo?
- What are the alternatives?
- What happens when different knowledges speak to
each other?
- Begin developing your Website using the template
provided or creating your own if you prefer. You may include relevant
photos, links to other sites, people's opinions on the issue or quotes
from appropriate articles or books. The idea is to develop a discussion
of the Issue you have chosen based around the 'four key questions'.
Download a template for developing your website here
and save it to your hard drive. If you need help doing this, please
check the more detailed instructions here
in the student web pages, the bottom drawer in the Contested Knowledges
office.
- Email a first draft copy of your presentation to you
lecturer, including all necessary files for feedback and advice, by the
beginning of week 6.
- Email your final copy by the beginning of week 12 for
assessment and posting to the web for other students to see and comment
upon. The assignment will be useful as a resource for other students in
the following years.
