Socio-cultural issues: Overview

There are two major topics in this theme: interpersonal communication and development and the lived experience: consumers and carers. Through these we examine the techniques, interpretation and complexities of interpersonal communication. The theories associated with human development across the lifespan are explored and associated with potential vulnerabilities of mental health at various stages of development. The experiences of the consumers will be discussed along with the role and responsibilities of carers.

Interpersonal communication and development

This topic will be divided into two sections: Interpersonal communication and human development across the lifespan.

Communication - is the foundation of interpersonal relationships. We will look at modes and styles of communication along with factors that influence interpersonal communication.

Human development across the life span - The field of life-span developmental psychology can be defined as the scientific study of the behaviour, cognition and personality of human beings of all ages. We look at theories to assist in our understanding of how growth and change influences our personality development and shapes the person we are at different stages throughout out lives.

The lived experience: Consumers and carers

Consumers and carers – What is it like to be diagnosed with a mental illness? How does this affect family, friends, relatives and colleagues? What is the role of the carer? All of these issues will be looked at in this topic.
