What influences developmental changes?

Learning Journal. Do you agree with the following statement?

Developmental changes in thinking and emotional response are caused entirely by learning but those involving physical abilities and growth are caused by genetic factors.

Each person is unique. No two individuals, even in the same family, experience life in the same way; even identical twins eventually have different friendship networks, partners and occupations. When endeavouring to understand how individuals develop as they do, a number of factors are taken into account, such as

  1. Biological factors - include all genetic and health related factors that affect development
  2. Psychological factors - include all internal perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and personality factors that affect development
  3. Socio cultural factors - include interpersonal, societal, cultural, and ethnic factors that affect development
  4. Life-cycle influences reflect differences in how the same event affects people of different ages

According to developmental psychologists human development and behaviour is influenced by a combination of the above factors.

The different stages of human development from birth to death have been the subject of interest for a number of prominent development theorists. Sigmund Freud was one such theorist, and although much of his work is not being used today his work on personality development still influences our understanding of personality development.

A good working knowledge of developmental psychology is essential for all mental health professionals. This knowledge will assist you to understand how issues associated with different developmental stages may contribute to a person’s mental wellbeing.
