Boundary characteristics

More boundary length

  • enhances edge species

Less boundary length

  • decreases edge area and non native species

If the boundary is convoluted

  • fewer species move along boundary
  • more cross boundary between habitats
  • erosion along boundary is less

If the boundary is relatively straight

  • more animals move along boundary
  • fewer cross it
  • erosion increases (Forman, 1995)
