Introduction

Aim of this topic

This topic deals with the management of threats posed by tropical invaders.

The aim of this topic is:

To provide students with information that would enable them to crtitically evaluate a plan for managing invasive species.

This should include both an understanding of the ideal or theoretical approaches to managing an invader, and an appreciation of the practical constraints on actually trying to implement an "ideal" approach. By understanding the ideal approach and its limitations you should be able to critically evaluate an existing invasive species management plan.

The sections of this Topic are largely organised in relation to the temporal sequence of the biological invasion process. This covers the various management options ranging from quarantine and screening species before they are introduced, through to mitigating the impacts of well-established invaders that we must learn to live with.

I recommend reading the Assignment 3 task sheet before you start the topic so you can develop your responses as you work through the learning materials.
