Putting it to work

Creating a professional looking document requires attention to detail in the use of the techniques you have already learned. This section highlights how alignment and the appropriate use of space can help you achieve professional document design.

Alignment
Appropriate use of alignment can not only enhance the readability of your document but also add some flair. You have four choices for aligning your text:
    • Justified (flush left, flush right)
    • Flush left with a ragged right margin
    • Flush right with a ragged left margin
    • Centred

The reading opposite will provide some tips for effective text alignment. Complete the reading and then re- align where appropriate the text in the passage opposite.

White space

One of the techniques for increasing the readability of your document is to increase the white space surrounding your text.

White space can take many forms:

  • The open area surrounding a headline,
  • The page margins or an advertisement or publication
  • The vertical space between columns of type
  • The space created by ragged line endings or unjustified type
  • Paragraph indents and extra line space between paragraphs
  • The space associated with subheads
  • Leading between lines of type.

Reading 5 by Parker and berry provide practical methods to create more white space in your documents.

Pitfalls
White space can open up a document but it can also be overused. Review the previous reading and make a list of how you think white space can be mis-used.
