ICT & the NT Curriculum Framework

The final topic is only for Education students studying E-Ticket.

In this topic you will investigate where and how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) feature in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF).

You will also be introduced to an ICT teacher continuum that teachers in the Northern Territory are asked to use to self assess their ICT skills in relation to their school contexts.

Develop your skills - ICT & NTCF

How do ICT feature in the NTCF?
There are a range of interconnected elements in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework. Explore these elements in either

  • the interactive powerpnt opposite
  • or the online link to the documents

to find out how Information and Communication technologies (ICT) are interpreted within this curriculum document.

TASK: After viewing the resources above - answer the following questions:

  1. What is the role of ICT in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework?

    Answer

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be viewed as a tool and an enabler for teaching and learning in teh NTCF. It underpins the content curriculum areas and where possible, teachers are encouraged to use ICT as a vehicle in the learning processes: for composing, comprehending, organising and analysing.

  1. How can you use the skills you have learned in this unit - to implement the philosophy of ICT in the NT Curriculum Framework?

What is the ICT Teacher Continuum?
The ICT Teacher Continuum is a self-evaluation guide to indicate a teacher's current level of ICT integration in classroom practice. It also represents a vision for how technology can be integrated into the school/classroom environment.

The continuum is a matrix which enables teachers to identify their classroom practices on two scales:

  • 4 phases of their own journey with ICT integration:
    1. uncertain and/or hesitant
    2. willing byt dependent
    3. confident & proficient
    4. leading and enabling others
  • 3 key areas of integration:
    1. vision
    2. approach and ethics
    3. classroom ICT & integration

Read the ICT Teacher Continuum opposite to udnerstand the details of the two dimensions and think about what you currently know and understand about ICT curriculum integration and what you have seen as a student or your visits to schools.

Domains of Learning Technology

Four domains of learning technology are identified in the NTCF:

  • Inquiry: Problem-Solving and Decision-Making through Research.
  • Communication: through Presentation, Publication or Performance.
  • Operating: Computer Components; and
  • Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Society.

Make sure you udnerstand these 4 domains. How do these relate to the organisation and skills presented in E-Ticket?

Putting it to work: ICT & the NTCF

Lets put the continuum into practice.

Educational Capabilities Survey

During your teaching career (perhaps in your first year of teaching) you will need to complete an Educational Capabilities survey which will assist you to place yoruself on the continuum.

Download the continuum opposite and browse through the 50+ items. Remember this test is usually done online.

From your current experience, either as a student (think about some of your teachers/lecturers) or your own experience teachign how could some of these questions be answered.

Hypothetical

Choose one of the scenarios opposite. If possible, work with a partner. Complete the hypothetical by assuming the role of the teacher. You are that teacher!

  1. Read the information about the teacher
  2. Predict where the teacher may be on the continuum
  3. Complete the sections on the survey on Vision and Approaches as if you were this teacher.

Integrating ICT

This unit has introduced you to a range of IT skills and software applications with a view to using them to communicating effecitvely - a key competency for an effective teacher and as an aid to organising your data.

Reflect on what you have learned.

  • What could eventually be integrated into your teaching?
  • How could you use this information and skills to teach students?
  • How can you use some of the skills learned to organise your teaching/data.

What have I learned?

After completing these activities you should:
  • have a reasonable understanding of the role of ICT in the NTCF
  • have some idea of where your current skills and understandings would enable you to complete the Ed Cap survey.

Congratulations! you have now completed the last topic in E-TICKET!
