Vegetation mapping and modelling

GIS and RS are being increasingly used in environmental and landscape studies and in vegetation mapping and modelling.

• Integrating information from remote sensing, aerial photographs and field surveys within a GIS allows digital vegetation and land use maps to be produced for wide areas.
  
  
• GIS is particularly useful for modelling ecosystem pattern since the characteristics of ecosystems are determined by vegetation.
  
  
• GIS also provides the capability to map vegetation pattern at different scales, thus enabling the hierarchical nature of ecosystems to be investigated.
