Looking at Community
In this topic we will focus on the attributes of communities, while asking you to be aware of your position and role within a community. What are the characteristics of the community around a particular problem?
- What types of community capital exits in the community?
- What sources of information do community members use to inform decisions?
- From whom do they prefer to learn?
- How they prefer to learn?
- What are the literacy skills within the community?
- Is the community permanent or transient or mobile?
- Are there groups with competing interests in the community?
- What knowledge does the community already have?
- What networks already exist? With whom will you need to form partnerships?
- Does the community share your concerns? Are there issues that need to be resolved before the community can focus on your concerns and priorities?
Resolving and understanding community characteristics, structures and processes will underpin productive community engagement.
