Lecturer's Role

It's common to think of your lecturer as the fount of all knowledge in the classroom. I think it is important to dispel that myth right from the start.

If I am going to be consistent with the ideas I am presenting to you, I can't sit here and present to you a pile of information and expect you to reproduce that knowledge in the exam or in a series of essays. I really need to be practicing what I preach .

If you are active participants in the learning process for this unit, my role is to facilitate your learning, provide the conditions for you to be active in that learning, prepare and present ideas for you to consider and provide guidelines for you to use in the learning process.

I guess the other thing is that is it probably easy for me to say this, but how easy is it for you to suddenly change the way you learn just for this unit. If the idea of being an active learner is a bit foreign and daunting, don't worry the idea of being an active learner when I'm the teacher is a bit daunting as well.

Some of you will find this a bit of a struggle and really that is part of the whole learning process. Don't worry! Stay cool! Part of my job is also to be able to support you in your learning. I'm on the end of a phone and sitting at a computer screen most of the time and if you're nervous about what to do or not coping with a new way of doing things, call me, lets talk and work out a way of getting around your difficulties and making a success of your studies.

It's a whole new learning experience. Teaching from a textbook or telling you to read and regurgitate isn't going to make the type of things we talk about in this unit real. We are confident we've been able to create something here that helps real learning to happen, and we're here to support you in what might be quite a new experience for you in an educational setting.
