Assessment 2: Seminar Paper & Presentation: Research strategies for Interaction Design

Task

Individually, research one of the research strategies outlined below that can be used in the various phases of interaction design. Group members should choose different topics.s

Prepare a seminar paper, written in academic journal style, that presents an overview of how the strategy you have chosen can used at different stages of the interaction design process, techniques for data collection and analysis and where appropriate examples of how it has been used in other projects.

Length: 2000 words (approx)

Research

Begin your research with the relevant chapter from your text
Use a range of sources to research your topic
You are expected to use journal articles, recent texts and web resources
NOTE: web articles and Wikipedia is not sufficient for this essay

Content

Your paper should provide:
- an overview of the approach, describing what the approach is
- how and when it can be used during the interaction design process
- outline how data is gathered using the technique chosen
- how it is analysed and interpreted, and
- how this data can be presented depending on which interaction design activity it is used in
- where appropriate, provide a case study where this technique has been used - either in evaluation or design research
You may also choose to use a Writeboard for your topic (www.writeboard.org) and invite lecturers and other members of your group to be part of the paper‘s development.. This will enable you to receive advice and support as your topic is developed.

Your paper should be in the form of a technical report

Presentation criteria (59K)

Presentation

Length: (15 - 20 minutes)

Format

your presentation MUST be interactive. Don’t read your essay or your PowerPoint’s to your audience. Instead engage them with some interactive task.
Summarise key points, give plenty of examples
Use visual aids (Powerpoint, screen shots, diagrams, other AV as needed etc)
Give the audience opportunities to ask questions on your topic
You will be assessed by the lecturer and your own self assessment

Submission

1 week before – a paper copy of your essay should be submitted to your lecturer
Prior to the presentation, an abstract of your paper should be posted in Learnline along with any other resources you may wish students to refer to during the presentation. Your final papers should be included in your groups websites.
Presentations will continue as needed over a 4 week period (week 6- 10)
Once assigned, the presentation date is not negotiable (unless extenuating circumstances apply). If there is no presentation, there is no marks. If you read your presentation, you will receive 0.
If an extension is required for the paper, this must be requested in writing at least a week in advance.
