Overview

Welcome to Tropical Invaders and Biosecurity.

This unit is designed to provide students with an up-to-date perspective on tropical invasive species and biosecurity. The unit aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to perform as a professional project officer or natural resource manager, who can evaluate, prioritise and implement invasive species management programs at a range of scales.

The first module of the unit will introduce you to global changes that are occurring at the political, financial, cultural and social levels that could result in species invasions.

The second module examines the environmental, economic, and social impacts of invaders. We will learn from several case studies of tropical invaders including plants, animals and microbes.

The third module examines how population ecology and population modelling can be applied to the problem of invasive species management.

In the fourth module, we will examine ways that we can manage the threat of tropical invaders, including risk assessment, early detection and control.
