These teaching materials have been developed from a collaboration between the Tropical Savannas CRC and the Bushfire CRC and staff in their partner agencies.

The last decade has produced a valuable collection of research papers, website resources, management case studies and monitoring tools and greater understanding of the issues surrounding fire in northern Australia. The time is ripe to develop teaching and learning materials which draw upon the latest expertise in fire ecology and management.

The purpose of these course materials is to bring these resources together and to challenge students, who expect to work in natural resource management at the completion of their course, to use and critically evaluate them. We have also highlighted areas where there is a lack of information, or where there is controversy or conflict surrounding fire management decisions.

The content, activities and assessments have been developed with a view to the future employment of a typical graduate in natural resource management working in northern Australia. We have constantly asked ourselves, 'What will the graduate from this course need to know in their future workplace?' We also decided not to replicate the operational focus of the many excellent TAFE courses in fire and burning operations.

We hope that staff and students enjoy using these materials, and that graduates benefit from them in their future work as natural resource management professionals.
