Continuing the study of Gupapuyŋu, students cover grammar in detail and work on developing skills in the translation of short texts in a number of Yolŋu languages.

Yolŋu life and literature (10 credit points)
CAS205

Learning from Yolŋu speakers and writers about issues in Yolŋu philosophy, history and science. The Yolŋu lecturer along with guest speakers, will work through texts by Yolŋu writers in Yolŋu languages and English. Students will have some say over the direction of their research. This unit is available online by special arrangement. It can also be studied in the context of the annual Garma Festival, held at Gulkula in East Arnhemland.

Yolŋu Matha conversation (10 credit points)
CAS206

This unit focuses on the development of conversational skills in a Yolŋu language. Students use the vocabulary, grammar and kinship terms covered in CAS110 to develop oral fluency in a Dhuwal or a Dhuwala language. (Other Yolŋu languages may also be available). You must have a thoroughly known vocabulary of 150 words and work on vocab development throughout this unit.

Yolŋu texts and conversation (10 credit points)
CAS305

Working with Yolŋu texts in a variety of genres including their own writing, students tell stories, make presentations and develop conversational ability in Dhuwal, Dhuwala or another Yolŋu language.

Yolŋu languages and culture: Independent study
(10 credit points)
CAS311; ABY35

Students negotiate with their lecturers and Yolŋu intellectual property owners a research project which may involve some research and translation of Yolŋu texts in an agreed research area as well as the negotiation, elicitation, transcription and translation of new texts. Presentations of research findings will be made to the intellectual property owners and the Yolŋu community.

 

This unit is available internally, externally and online subject to negotiation with the unit co-ordinator and Yolŋu resource people.

Yothu Yindi Garma festival

Students who are willing to travel to Gove for the Yothu Yindi Garma festival (this will be held in August) may be able to negotiate to work on research projects with Yolngu consultants during the festival.
