Learnline Web Server - Trogon

You have been provided access to the Trogon server and now need to map your drive so you can upload your files and link these up in Learnline. Follow the instructions below to learn how to do this.

Open All | Close All

Access to the Trogon server is controlled by the cdu-staff domain credentials. Ie, the same username and password used to login to a cdu-staff computer.

There are three methods to connect to the new server:

  1. Map a drive letter
  2. FTP (Seamonkey users)
  3. SCP (off-campus access).

1. Map a drive letter

Open the Computer window by choosing Start→Computer.

Click the Map Network Drive button on the toolbar to open the Map Network Drive dialog box.

In the "Folder" box, enter "\\servername\username" eg. \\trogon.cdu.edu.au\nsmith (DO NOT CLICK BROWSE)

Click FINISH and the drive will be mapped.

To access the mapped drive

  1. Click on "My Computer"
  2. Click on the drive letter you have earlier assinged in step 1 while mapping a drive. ( You will see the directory (folder name) where you have both read and write access)
  3. You can drag and drop files here as with normal servers (please refer to the file naming accordion below)

2. FTP

ftp://username@servername/ eg. ftp://nsmith@trogon.cdu.edu.au

Due to security concerns, access via the FTP protocol is now restricted to within CDU networks. When off campus, you should use the SCP/SFTP method of connecting.

3. SCP

To connect via SCP/SFTP there are a few options

  • WinSCP:
    http://winscp.net/eng/index.php
  • Filezilla:
    http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
You must select the SFTP mode in "File -> Site Manager" to connect.

If you are having any problems connectig via FTP or other methods, please contact Helen Rysavy x 7779.

Naming your files

If you name your files correctly you will be able to quickly find and identify your materials on the Learnline web server. Do not create nested folders as this will lead to longer URLs and is not necessary.

Using weeks in your unit

If your Learnline site is setup using weeks, where s1 = Semester 1, 13 = current year i.e. 2013 and wk1 is week 1 etc:

  • s113_wk1.mp3   or
  • s213_wk4.mov

Using modules in your unit

If your Learnline site is setup using modules:

  • s113_mod1.mp3 or
  • s213_mod2.mov

Using topics in your unit

If your Learnline site is setup using topics

  • s113_topic1.mp3
  • s213_topic2.mp3
  • ss13_topic5.mov

Anything else

Try to use a sensible naming convention so you can easily identify the files later.

Remember:

  • Name your files correctly
  • Do not use a mix of upper and lower case, ONLY use lower case.
  • Try not to use spaces, use an underscore instead, i.e. use_insead_of_space.
  • Do not use strange characters such as & % $ *
  • Name your files consistently across your unit
  • Only store media files on this server, use the Learnline Content Collection for other files such as word documents, pdf files, powerpoints etc

Upload your files

Open the correct unit folder on the server and just drag and drop or copy paste them as you would to any other drive.

How to link your web server files to your Learnline Unit

Because you are now accessing files from a "web server", your file path is now a URL.

This means that you must have the following components:

  • the starting url (http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/units/)
  • unit code
  • file name

http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/units/ followed by your unit code / (forward slash) file name.

The full URL would be:  http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/units/yourunit/filename.

For example, if my unit is abc123 and my first video in Semester 1, 2011, for week one lecture, I would name my file: s111_wk1.mp4 and my URL would be:

http://learnline.cdu.edu.au/units/abc123/s111_wk1.mp4

If you name your files correctly you will be able to quickly find and identify your materials on the Learnline web server. Do not create nested folders as this will lead to longer URLs and is not necessary.

Note: The Learnline web server is a Linux based system and therefore is case sensitive.  All file/folder names must be in lower case with no spaces.

Do not use:

  • uppercase
  • spaces
  • dashes
  • symbols eg , % : etc
