Phytophora
P. cinnamomi is a root fungus that cuases serious diseases and death of a very wide variety of plant species. It thrives in moist conditions and feeds on the roots and basal stem tissue of living plants. It weakens or kills the plants by hindering the movement of water and nutrients within the plant. Further information:Global Invasive Species Database The fungal pathogen Phytophora has been implicated in large-scale dieback
of mangoves (Avicennia marina) in the Pioneer Estuary, Mackay
QLD. Estimated that 130 hectares (20%) of mangoves dominated by A.
marina were effected (i.e. either dead or dying). Possibly the largest
recorded dieback due phytophora to date (Duke et al, 2000). A similar
incident was noted in the early 1970’s in the Port Curtis area,
northern QLD. |
