The fungal pathogen Phytophora has been implicated in large-scale dieback of mangoves (Avicennia marina) in the Pioneer Estuary, Mackay QLD. Estimated that 130 hectares (20%) of mangoves dominated by A. marina were effected (i.e. either dead or dying). Possibly the largest recorded dieback due phytophora to date (Duke et al, 2000). A similar incident was noted in the early 1970’s in the Port Curtis area, northern QLD.
