Footnotes
Footnotes appear at the bottom or foot of the page. They are an addition to your text. They take up space on the page that would ordinarily have been devoted to the text of your essay.
Footnotes are a bit like parentheses in that they draw attention to information that is not essential to the meaning of your text.
Footnotes enable you to:
- Provide your reader with the details of your source material
- Include additional information that explains or supplements the material discussed in your text
- Make cross-references to other parts of your essay. The great benefit or advantage of using footnotes ise that they are very reader-friendly.
The reader need only glance at the bottom of the page to note the sources of your information.
Once you have decided which footnoting approach to use, stick to it throughout your assignment. Be consistent.
