Gamete-forming cells
   
These are the structures that produce the male and female gametes (sex cells). They do this by mitosis.  
In the ferns, the female gametes (eggs) are produced in the archegonia (singular = 'archegonium'), as shown in the diagram.

In the ferns, the male gametes (sperm) are produced in the antheridia (singular = 'antheridium').
